How ITS Brought Deep Auto-Industry IT Experience to Del Grande Dealer Group

Del Grande Dealer Group (DGDG), the largest family-owned automotive group in the Bay Area, had outgrown what a single IT staff member could manage. Partnering with Intelligent Technical Solutions (ITS) brought a migration to Office 365 and Azure, stronger network security, and a proactive, structured approach that scaled with DGDG as its team grew past 1,200 employees.

THE CLIENT

The Largest Family-Owned Auto Group in the Bay Area

Since technology took over the automotive industry, the Del Grande Dealer Group team has taken pride in using innovative technology to streamline operations, grow the business, and provide customers the best service possible. DGDG initially had one person handling all of its technology - a responsibility that became too much for one person as the organization grew.

At a Glance

  • Largest family-owned automotive group in the Bay Area
  • Grown from 300-400 to 1,200+ knowledge workers
  • Previously supported by a single internal IT staff member
  • Managed IT partnership with ITS since transitioning off legacy systems

“Initially, we had 300-400 knowledge workers and our staff has grown consistently,” says Ralph Yamasaki of Del Grande Dealer Group. “Just trying to be status quo was no longer sufficient; we needed a more managed and more structured, proactive approach.”

THE CHALLENGE

One Person, an Entire Dealer Group

DGDG’s network was growing rapidly but lacked a governance structure, centralized PC and server management, or the security protections that growth demanded. PCs were patched intermittently, some hadn’t been updated in years, antivirus was out of date, and there were no central patching strategies. Many employees were still running Windows XP and outdated versions of Microsoft Office. “These team members were no longer able to operate because the software was so out of date, and they couldn’t open attachments correctly,” says Yamasaki.

It was also critical to DGDG that its IT partner understood the automotive industry specifically. After due diligence with several providers, DGDG was connected to ITS - highly recommended by another well-respected dealership.

What That Looked Like Day to Day

  • One Person, an Entire Organization
A single IT staff member supported the technology needs of hundreds of employees across the dealer group.
  • Outdated Machines and Software
Many employees were still running Windows XP and old versions of Office, unable to even open attachments correctly.
  • No Centralized Patching or Antivirus
PCs were patched inconsistently, antivirus was out of date, and third-party applications went unmanaged.
  • A Fragmented Email Brand
The organization's email wasn't unified under a single, professional domain.
WHAT ITS DID

‘We Needed a More Structured, Proactive Approach’

ITS worked quickly to implement a more managed and strategic IT approach for DGDG, centered on modernizing the platform and building a foundation that could scale with the business.

  • Migrated to Office 365 and Azure
ITS centralized email, licensing, and file sharing on Office 365 and integrated the network into Microsoft Azure using AD Connect.
  • Built a Resilient, Backed-Up Network
The team stood up a proper Windows domain and implemented Azure Backup and Site Recovery for business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Locked Down Network Security
DNS filtering and category filtering reduced web-browsing abuse, while tighter computer security cut down on infections and viruses.
  • Modernized the Network Backbone
ITS upgraded Cisco switching to Gigabit speeds and deployed a company-wide Meraki wireless solution, with Single Sign-On and two-factor authentication planned next.

Their whole team has a great handle on determining what issues will come up and they’re excellent at working to prevent them from happening.”
