7 Cyber Security Tips for Stronger Passwords

Almost half of all users (42%) reuse the same password for online logins, according to Statista. If that password is cracked by malicious actors, it could lead to a data breach. Las Vegas managed IT service providers recommend several important ways to keep your business safer.

1. Change default passwords immediately.

Malicious actors frequently gain access to a network using default passwords (those that come preprogrammed by the vendor in new software or hardware). Whenever anyone in your organization installs new software or a device, make it standard procedure to change the password right away.

2. Use strong passwords.

The weakest password in the world is “123456,” used on one out of every six accounts. Make your passwords stronger with a combination of numbers, unusual words, and letters (both uppercase and lowercase). To keep things simple, try a popular tool such as LastPass, 1Password, or Keeper.

3. Don't send personally identifying data via email.

Instruct employees to avoid using email to send any sensitive information, such as account numbers or Social Security numbers. If data must be sent by email, use encryption.

4. Lock out users after multiple unsuccessful attempts.

Repeated login attempts are a red flag of malicious activity. Decide on a maximum number of unsuccessful login attempts, and then lock those users out.

5. Install locking screensavers.

One of the simplest ways to keep workstations secure is to lock them down after a period of inactivity. Require users to enter a password to unlock the screensaver.

6. Use multi-factor authentication.

Passwords alone may not be strong enough to protect sensitive data. Keep your data safer by adding a second factor, such as a token or app that generates authentication codes.
