Prepared for the Red Flag Rule?

The US Federal Government has a Red Flag Rule which states, among many things, that your organization must have a specific written policy in place for how it safeguards and handles identity theft.

These regulations began in June 2010. However, as of today, few small to mid sized organizations are in-line. The rule tries to ensure ‘red flags’ are marked in advance, including unknown addresses, missing Social Security Numbers, unusual account activity, and suspect photo ID’s, to name a few.

These rules apply not just to banks and financial institutions, but all creditors, defined as any organization offering products and services that involve lending. In other words, anytime you send an invoice to your client or customer, you become a creditor, triggering the Red Flag Rule for your company. This rule is enforced by the FTC itself.

To be in-line with these rules, you’ll need clear documentation how to handle any and all forms of identity breach. This includes follow up recommendations that involve diverse facets from staff education to data encryption.

The Red Flag Rule is something you’d want to pay close attention to, as identity theft potentially awaits on one end, a $3,500 fine on another, and lawsuits from customers on yet another – Are you prepared?  If you are not sure, call one of our computer specialists for an appointment today in Las Vegas!

We have noticed a disturbing trend here in Las Vegas over the last year or so. Outsourced IT companies will go in and work with one of our clients at bargain basement prices, and then 6 months later, they’ll be out of business and the customer’s network is in shambles.  It is interesting this seems to happen, one with think with more business, they should be able to make their payroll and retain staff…  but this is the crux of the problem.

Good staff is not cheap.  Having the best tools to keep your network up costs thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.  When a company decided to be the cost leader in the field, if they do not have tremendous buying power, like an Accenture, they are only able to do this by one of the following methods:

  1. Invest less in their employees which means you are likely to get lessexperienced computer technicians in Las Vegas
  2. Cut their IT investment which means your network is going to be supported by older tools which may not protect you from potential threats to your network
  3. By making all the projects they do have “change orders” …  a fancy way to say you have to pay more money because they didn’t account for any hiccups.

If you are seeing that your computer technician in Las Vegas is charging 20% less or more than everyone else, there is a real cause for concern.  If it is 10%, you are likely still dealing with someone who can support you and is just being aggressive in their pricing.

If you have been experiencing the bad effects of a cheap computer technician in Las Vegas and want to have a better experience please give us a call.
